Yale became the first university to have a formal men's squash team in 1919. The first formal team picture was taken in 1920. Women were admitted to Yale in the fall of 1969 and the first formal women's team began play in 1973-74. The men's teams have won 13 national Championships and 5 Ivy Championships. As of the close of the 2003-2004 season, the women's teams have won 4 Howe Cups (emblematic of the national championship) and 3 Ivy League Championships.

The old American courts and The Brady Squash Center have been the site of virtually every major American intercollegiate and USSRA tournament and, with the international courts, major international tournaments and championships.

There have been many fine coaches at Yale and John Skillman and Dale Walker and David Talbott served with the longest tenure - 35 years for Skillman, 18 for Walker and 20 for Talbott, as of the close of the 2003-2004 season.
